When it comes to sound and picture if they don’t meld well the final cut doesn’t work. Post-Production Supervisor, Laura A Garcia moderates a panel with Juan Peralta, Re-recording Mixer, and Frank Montano, Supervising Sound Editor, to discuss the importance of sound in storytelling as they share their career journeys, pitfalls, and best practices for working in post-production sound and how creatively weave the magic of sounds into filmmaking.

Laura A. Garcia

Laura A. Garcia is a producer based in Los Angeles, California. Garcia has an aptitude for finances, as she worked for the State of Maine Government Planning Office in Accounting after studying accounting for seven years throughout high school and college. After college, Garcia attended the Los Angeles Film School and discovered her passion for Post Production, majoring in Editing and Producing. Garcia has developed and cultivated an extensive list of industry contacts through her work with a variety of networks, including National Geographic, Speed, Fox, Animal Planet, Discovery, Travel Channel, Syfy, OWN, and TruTv. She’s currently an Associate Producer for Dick Wolf and NBC on Chicago Fire and Chicago PD, working closely with all aspects of the finishing process.

Juan Peralta

Juan Peralta first became interested in sound for motion pictures after watching Jurassic Park in the theater in June 1993. Something triggered his curiosity about how those dinosaur sounds were created. He started looking into how and who created these sounds. Soon after the movie release there many Behind the Scenes specials and there was the answer, Skywalker Sound.

Juan then looked into what kind of education was necessary to pursue a career in Audio Post Production. While living in Florida and attending the University of Central Florida he discovered an audio engineering school just down the street called Full Sail. Full Sail provided a great audio foundation that could lead to a multitude of different careers. One of those being Audio Post Production.

After graduating Full Sail in 1995 he drove straight to Burbank California and was able to find a job working for a small Post facility called EFX Systems. There he worked as a Re-Recording Assistant on all kinds of projects from video games, IMAX movies, TV shows and Feature Films. After working at EFX for 3 years and meeting a lot of other audio professionals he was able to interview for a position at Skywalker Sound.

Juan was hired over the phone and started working there in January of 1999. After working for 8 years at Skywalker he made the leap to becoming a Re-Recording Mixer. He has now been at Skywalker Sound for over 23 years working on projects like; Avengers Endgame, Avengers Infinity War, Ad Astra, Sing 2, Dr. Strange and the Multiverse of Madness

Frank Montano

Frank was born in the San Fernando Valley in 1965. He grew up in a large Mexican American household. The family practiced all traditional ways of their heritage. Frank graduated high school in 1983. He continued his education at UEI trade Tech during the day, well working evenings for a small electronic company.

Frank began his audio career as an engineer for Quad Eight sound console manufacturing in 1984, before moving over to Cannon Films in 1986. As part of the engineering staff that was responsible for building the post-production sound facilities for the studio. Uponcompletion of the project, Frank was given the opportunity to began his feature film mixing career.

Making a name for himself, Frank caught the eyes and ears of Hollywood, by earning forty plus film credits by the age of twenty-four. He has worked at some of the most prestigious sound facilities in Hollywood and has mixed numerous films all over the world. Frank has called Universal Studios home since 2001.

Bryan Parker

Bryan Parker is an Emmy-nominated sound supervisor, re-recording mixer and sound designer, from a background in live event production and touring sound. His work in both television and film ranges from period drama ONE NIGHT IN MIAMI (Regina King) to comedy series AWKWARD (MTV), as well as heavy metal documentary DIO: DREAMERS NEVER DIE and dark comedy thriller A LOT OF NOTHING, both from SXSW 2022’s official selection. His latest work includes the biopic series JULIA for HBOMax and NEXT EXIT, which premieres at Tribeca Film Festival 2022. For over 15 years he has customized his approach and workflow to each project's unique needs. He is especially interested in the musicality and nuance of human speech, in the expressive power of everyday machines and vehicles, and in the way background sounds can subtly shape emotion and steer expectation.
