The lineup for the 21st edition of the Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival (LALIFF) has been announced and things look like they’ve come together nicely.

On Wednesday (May 4), LALIFF revealed that the documentary Mija about a Mexican American music manager in San Bernardino, California, who is the only documented member of her family, will open the festival on June 1. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year.

The closing night film on June 5 will be The Father of the Bride starring Oscar nominee Andy Garcia, Gloria Estefan, Isabela Merced, Adria Arjona, and Diego Boneta. The film, which hits HBO Max on June 16, is the second remake of the 1950 film of the same name, but this time with a Cuban family at the center of its narrative.

“LALIFF Is proud to present a diverse line-up of Latino storytellers,” said Oscar-nominated actor Edward James Olmos, co-founder of LALIFF. “The festival has seen tremendous growth, with support from both the film industry and our audience, allowing us to showcase and nurture important voices that the world needs to hear.”

Other films scheduled to screen this year at LALIFF include Blood-Red Ox about a journalist who travels to Bolivia with his boyfriend who loses his mind when he starts to have visions of a giant red ox; The Other Tom about a mother who makes a difficult decision to take her son off his ADHD medication when the side effects become too much to handle; and Perfume de Gardenias about an elderly woman living in Puerto Rico who designs a customized funeral for her husband and begins to do the same for others in her community.

“One of our goals at LALIFF is to ensure that Latino storytellers have a world-class venue to present their works,” said Diana Cadavid, LALIFF Artistic Director. “We offer a platform for our artists to connect with a diverse and multicultural audience, as well as with important players in the industry.”

LALIFF will take place June 1-5 at the TCL Chinese Theater and TCL Chinese 6 in Hollywood. For a complete rundown of all the features, shorts and TV series scheduled to screen at the 21st edition of LALIFF, visit LALIFF.org.
