Worthy

Directed by Jalmer Caceres

United States | 15 min | 2023

A mischievous 10-year-old boy determined to show his mother that he can handle the responsibilities of caring for his first dog is forced to make a decision that changes his childhood forever when he gets wrapped up with the neighborhood dogfighter.

Junior is a 10-year-old first generation Salvadoran-American boy struggling with a sense of abandonment due to the absence of his father. When Junior fails to properly care for his recently rescued dog, Worthy, his mother decides that they will give the dog away. Junior buckles-down and sets out to prove that there is no better owner for Worthy.

Writer/Director Jalmer Caceres was born in El Salvador, without a television in his home. After arriving in the US at the age of five and growing up in Los Angeles as a latchkey child, he fell in love with Movies and American Television through countless hours of unsupervised viewing. Jalmer became the first in his family to graduate from college and recently attained his M.F.A. from the American Film Institute. He was a 2021 Diverso Minority Report Screenwriting Fellow, and a 2022 selected Writer/Director for Lena Waithe’s Executive Produced Season 2, Indeed Rising Voices Program. His film with the Rising Voices initiative, EMPTY BASES, debuted at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York. Jalmer is dedicated to exploring the Latinx diaspora through themes of family, national identity, belonging, and displacement in his work.
