Masterclass: Carlos López Estrada

Fresh off of directing Disney's Raya and the Last DragonCarlos López Estrada has a foot in both live-action and animation. He's also navigated his way from directing music videos for acclaimed pop bands, including Jesse y Joy and Capital Cities, to feature film. In conversation with film journalist Carlos Aguilar, this masterclass discussion will explore Estrada's eclectic background and perspectives as a director.

Carlos López Estrada
is codirector of Walt Disney Animation Studios’ fantasy action adventure film, Raya and the Last Dragon. Having joined Walt Disney Animation Studios in late Spring 2019, López Estrada is a member of the Studios’ story trust, and has another animated feature in development.
His debut film, Blindspotting premiered opening night at Sundance 2018 and subsequently sold to Lionsgate for a theatrical release. He was selected for Variety’s “10 Directors to Watch” for 2018 and his second feature, Summertime, premiered opening night of Sundance 2020.
 

Carlos Aguilar was chosen as one of 6 young film critics to partake in the first Roger Ebert Fellowship organized by RogerEbert.com, the Sundance Institute and Indiewire in 2014. Aguilar’s work has appeared in prestigious publications such as Los Angeles Times, The Wrap, Indiewire, Vulture, RogerEbert.com, MovieMaker Magazine, Remezcla, Filmmaker Magazine, Variety Latino, Slate, Bustle, Americas Quarterly, among others.
