Pedacito de Carne
Directed by Akilah "AK" Walker
USA | 16 min | 2023
Sandra finds herself in a new role as a caregiver for her mother living with frontotemporal dementia (FTD). Burnt out by the nonsense that is social service, the relentless pile on of caregiving demands, and the heartbreak of slowly losing parts of her mother, Sandra risks it all and takes a night off.
"Pedacito de Carne" follows Sandra, a millennial caregiver for her mother, Antonia who is living with a rare form of dementia. The disease is quickly progressing and both women have to adjust to their new roles. In the midst of her caregiving duties, Sandra runs into an old flame, Fuzzy who asks her out and reignites her desire. Ignoring her duties, Sandra takes a night off to meet up with Fuzzy. The next morning will bring a surprise.
Akilah "AK" Walker is a director, writer and creative producer fascinated by the performative, the magical and the absurd – especially as it relates to people of the African diaspora.
Akilah was named ‘Best First Time Director (Female)" by The Independent Shorts Awards in October of 2021 for her directorial debut short film "Ivar Tunnel: Shook Ones", which gained distribution and made its television debut on the REVOLT channel in July 2022. The film also won Best US Short Film from the San Francisco Indie Film Festival and Best Cinematography from the Black Women Film Network.
