History
In late 2024 the Academy designated LALIFF an Oscar-qualifying festival for its live-action and animated short awards. That single line changes the math for a short filmmaker. Winning at LALIFF now puts a film directly into Academy consideration — no self-funded theatrical run, no chasing a qualifying circuit.
The festival combined its film market and industry forum together into a program called LALIFF Connect, built to put filmmakers in the same room as producers and financiers around financing and co-production deals, and added a Best Feature Film Award to sit alongside the shorts categories. Underneath all of it is a student showcase that screened over 300 short films made by kids in the Youth Cinema Project program. Taken together it’s an unusual thing to have: a pipeline that can meet someone in grade school, fund their first real film, put them in front of the people who write checks, and send the result to the Academy — all under one roof, over the span of a career.
Recognized for its discovery of emerging talent, LALIFF has been home to first films by Academy Award-winning directors, Guillermo del Toro, Alfonso Cuaron, Alejandro G. Iñarritu, and Pablo Larrain, as well as home to the first films by Golden Globe-winning actresses, Gina Rodriguez and America Ferrera.
Throughout its history, LALIFF has bestowed the awards and recognitions to such industry icons as, Jennifer Lopez, Raul Julia, Pedro Almodovar, Carlos Saura, Maria Felix, Anthony Quinn, Nelson Pereira dos Santos, Federico Luppi, Rita Moreno, Ricardo Montalban, Antonio Banderas, Ignacio Lopez Tarso, Gustavo Santaolalla and Gabriel Figueroa.
LALIFF was founded in 1997 when Edward James Olmos and co-founders Marlene Dermer (1997-2014), Kirk Whisler and the late George Hernandez joined forces with the City of Los Angeles to form the first-ever Latino focused international film festival.
